Recycling in Public Housing Estate Project

### Recycling Ambassador Pilot Scheme Starting from August 2007, Ever Green Association (EGA) was supported by the Housing Authority to collaborate with Creative Property Services Consultants Ltd. (CPSC) in initiating the Recycling Ambassador Pilot Scheme. CPSC was responsible for staff costs while EGA provided expertise in recycling to monitor the progress of this Scheme. Moreover, the income from selling recyclables was used in daily operation. The Pilot Scheme aims to urge the Housing Authority to create a new position of recycling ambassador when signing new management contracts and to fund NGOs in promoting recycling and environmental projects in public housing estates. EGA operated recycling points at Sau Mau Ping Estate, Ching Ho Estate and Hau Tak Estate, encouraging residents to give out their recyclables in exchange of other goods. Recycling ambassadors promotes the ideas of waste separation at source, recycling of waste and reduction in household waste through the combination of environmental education and recycling service. It aims to change the way and attitude in which residents treat recyclables, making public housing estates the “green housing estates” in Hong Kong as well as creating eco-friendly recycling social enterprise with economic benefits for the underprivileged in the region. ### Green Buddy in Green Community Scheme EGA started the Green Buddy in Green Community Scheme with CPSC and Nice Property Management Ltd. (NPM) in 2009, officially operating a systematic paid recycling service in public housing estates. EGA set up recycling points at Sau Mau Ping South Estate, Ching Ho Estate, Tin Wah Estate, Ka Wai Chuen and Wuhu Street, registering about 8,400 households as Green Buddies. With the approximation of three persons in a household, it could be deduced that there are about 25,000 people participating in our recycling project. They regularly take that household waste to our recycling points in exchange for supermarket vouchers. Green Buddies barter for $574,850 worth of vouchers a year. ### Five main objectives: 1. To promote waste separation at source and waste recycling 2. To set up a membership system and encourage continuous participation 3. To create eco-friendly jobs by hiring recycling ambassadors 4. To use cash vouchers instead of simply barter trade in order for members to have greater autonomy 5. To operate according to market prices, making it a real paid service ### Recycling Points (closed): - G/F, Ching Yun House, Ching Ho Estate, Sheung Shui, New Territories - Tuesday and Thursday (AM) - Saturday (AM and PM) - G/F, Sau Chi House, Sau Mau Ping Estate, Kwun Tong , Kowloon - Monday, Wednesday, and Friday (AM) - Saturday (AM and PM) - G/F, Sau Mei House, Sau Mau Ping South Estate, Kwun Tong, Kowloon - Tuesday and Thursday (PM) - Saturday (AM and PM) - G/F, Wah Yau House, Tin Wah Estate, Yuen Long, New Territories - Monday and Wednesday (AM) - Saturday (AM and PM) - G/F, Ka Hing Lau, Ka Wai Chuen, Hung Hom, Kowloon - Saturday (PM) ----- #### Membership Card (click to enlarge) ![membership card](/site/assets/img/programs/estate/membership%20card.thumb.jpg)
